Reverend Livingston Wills\, better known to generations of Omahans as “The Broom Man”\, was one of those people. \nFor decades\, Rev. Wills walked Omaha’s streets selling handcrafted brooms with an unwavering smile\, offering words of encouragement\, and reminding everyone he met of the value of hard work\, faith\, kindness\, and perseverance. His daily walks made him more than a familiar face\, they made him a beloved Omaha icon whose legacy continues to inspire today. \nJoin members of The Broom Man Committee as they share the remarkable story behind Reverend Wills’ life\, the vision that brought his legacy back into the spotlight\, and the journey to create the permanent bronze sculpture now standing in Turner Park. \nLearn why the late Marc Kraft\, former President of Broom Man LTD\, believed preserving Rev. Wills’ memory was so important: \n\n“Rev. Wills was a remarkable individual who crossed boundaries and brought people together with his simple message of hard work\, faith\, and kindness. By placing this beautiful sculpture in Turner Park\, we preserve his memory and inspire future generations to be good neighbors.” \n\nYou’ll also discover the thoughtful symbolism behind sculptor John Lajba’s design. Rather than placing Rev. Wills high upon a pedestal\, the sculpture stands directly on an old historic sidewalk\, allowing visitors to walk beside him just as countless Omahans once did. Positioned facing southeast at the corner of Farnam Street and Turner Boulevard\, the sculpture captures the familiar sight of Reverend Wills patiently waiting to cross the street\, a scene many longtime residents still remember. \nThis inspiring presentation is more than the story of a sculpture. What began as natural disasters quickly became a complex legal puzzle as the shifting river changed the very boundary between Iowa and Nebraska. \nToday\, Carter Lake remains one of the most unique communities in America. Although surrounded by Omaha\, it is officially part of Iowa. Meanwhile\, Lake Manawa emerged as one of the region’s most popular recreational destinations while attracting competing claims from both states. \nThrough historical research\, maps\, photographs\, and compelling stories\, Troy will unravel how floods\, geography\, politics\, and the courts combined to create one of the most unusual border disputes in American history. \nIf you’ve ever wondered why Carter Lake belongs to Iowa\, despite appearing to be part of Omaha\, this presentation is for you. \nSIGN UP \n\n					\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Troy Stolp is a Lewis Central High School graduate who has dedicated much of his academic and professional life to the study and preservation of local history. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Religious Studies from Iowa State University\, a Bachelor of Arts in History from Buena Vista University\, and a Master of Arts in History from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Troy serves on the Board of Directors for Preserve Council Bluffs and the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County and has been involved with the Council Bluffs Historic Preservation Commission. His experience also includes work with the Durham Museum\, where he further developed his passion for sharing regional history with the public. Known for his engaging presentations and deep knowledge of local history\, Troy brings a unique perspective to the stories that have shaped both sides of the Missouri River. Her passion\, conviction\, dedication and persistence predicted her success.  As for being a woman\, she said\, “Being a woman has only bothered me in climbing trees.” \nThe importance of politics and political connections is magnified at the New York state legislature in Albany as she advocates for a 54 hour work week for women and becomes the voice of the work force. In 1911 she witnesses the horrific Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the death of 146 young women\, and this experience further sparks her goal to implement workplace safety standards. \nThis quote from the Library Journal describes the book as\, “a fictionalized (well researched) portrayal of a phenomenal woman who has largely been lost to history.”

DESCRIPTION:Magic Carpet Ride: Omaha’s Skyline\, Lost Landmarks & Hidden Stories – A Journey Through Time with Thomas Neal \nSunday\, July 12 | 2:00 PM\nMetro Community College\, Fort Omaha Campus\nBuilding 10\, Room 110 \n \nStep back to downtown Omaha in 1947 through the lens of a remarkable Omaha World-Herald photograph. \nAt this month’s Second Sunday Talk\, Douglas County Historical Society Executive Director Tom Neal will explore Omaha’s downtown skyline as it appeared nearly 80 years ago. Using this historic image as a guide\, Tom will share the stories behind many of the buildings captured in the photograph\, tracing their histories and revealing what became of them over the decades. \nAs the skyline evolved\, some structures disappeared\, others were transformed\, and new landmarks emerged to define the city we know today. Through photographs and historical insights\, attendees will see how Omaha’s downtown landscape has changed while learning about the people\, businesses\, and events connected to these iconic buildings. \nTom will also bring the story up to the present day\, comparing the 1947 skyline with modern Omaha and highlighting the dramatic changes that have shaped the city’s appearance. \nThe journey doesn’t stop with the buildings visible in the photograph. Along the way\, Tom will share stories of other significant Omaha properties that were not pictured but became forever linked to this image through what he describes as a “magic carpet ride” through local history. \nWhether you’re a history enthusiast\, architecture buff\, photography lover\, or simply curious about Omaha’s past\, this presentation offers a fascinating look at the city’s ever-changing skyline and the stories hidden within it. \n\n					\n			\n				\n			\n			\n		 \n		\n			Thomas Neal serves as Executive Director of the Douglas County Historical Society\, where he is dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories that have shaped Douglas County and the Omaha area. A passionate historian\, researcher\, and storyteller\, Tom has spent years uncovering local history and helping connect people with the places\, events\, and individuals that came before them. His presentations blend historical research with engaging storytelling\, bringing the past to life in ways that are both informative and accessible. Through his work with the Douglas County Historical Society\, Tom continues to inspire curiosity about our community’s history and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
