SUMMARY:Second Sunday: "I AM A MAN" Ponca Tribe of Nebraska
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca White Sullivan\, Vice Chairwoman for the Ponca Tribe\, will give a presentation on Chief Standing Bear the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. No man should be forced to leave his home\, forced on foot to walk hundreds of miles to the unknown\, watch disease and famine take the lives of hundreds\, and left with nothing but broken promises. Chief Standing Bear had endured enough when his son’s dying wish was to be buried back home; and the great Chief knew what had to be done. As a result of being arrested\, Chief Standing Bear proved through law that Native Americans were men with his famous statement in court\, “I AM A MAN.” But\, what became of Chief Standing Bear’s own Tribe after the trial and would he be Proud of his Ponca People today? \nMay 15 at 2:00 p.m. \nGross Auditorium at College of Saint Mary \nFree to DCHS members; $5 for non-members \nCall 402-455-9990 ext. 102 for reservations or email members@douglascohistory.org

SUMMARY:Women Defining History Luncheon and Runway Show
DESCRIPTION:The Women Defining History Luncheon is at capacity! Thank you for your interest. \nJoin us as we present our 11th annual Women Defining History Luncheon and Runway Show on Friday\, April 8\, 2022 at the Field Club of Omaha. \nEach year this event honors a local woman who inspires\, challenges\, and serves as a model to strengthen our community through philanthropic outreach\, historic preservation\, or courageous efforts with our Women Defining History Award. We are delighted to announce the 2022 Women Defining History Award honoree will be Kathy Gross. Kathy has stepped up to help enumerable nonprofit organizations in our community. Her willingness to pitch in and help wherever there is a need has benefitted Douglas County Historical Society\, Salvation Army\, The Nebraska Humane Society\, Heartland Family Services\, Joslyn Castle\, CHI Health and more! \nDuring these challenging past couple years\, we find ourselves at home more than ever. For many\, loungewear is our new uniform. This year\, we will look back to loungewear of decades past\, from embroidered linen nightgowns of the Edwardian era\, to mid-century quilted housecoats\, to frilly lingerie sets of the 1970s. Settle in and get comfortable as fashion historian Sue McLain of “Yesterday’s Lady” leads us on a fashion journey through the decades. Our mission here at DCHS is to invite the people of Omaha to celebrate their local history and learn more about their home. \nOur annual vintage runway show is one way we connect with our community and bring history to life in a fun and unique way. Proceeds from the event will help support artifact preservation. \nDoors open at 11am for the pre-event Patron Champagne Reception\, which includes early access to the vintage jewelry sale\, raffle\, and silent auction. Doors open for general admission ticket holders 11:30 am\, with the lunch and presentation starting at noon. \n\nThe Women Defining History Luncheon is at capacity! Thank you for your interest. \n\nFor more information\, please call 402-455-9990. Thank you for your support!
