SUMMARY:The Nitty Gritty of a Streetcar City
DESCRIPTION:The current DCHS exhibit highlights Omaha’s historic streetcar system. Active from the 1860s until 1955\, Omaha’s streetcar lines were once the primary way for Omaha residents to get around town. They were used to commute to work\, to go grocery shopping\, and to go to church. The exhibit contains photos of Omaha’s streetcar heyday and features an authentic seat\, route maps\, tickets\, and replica conductor uniforms. \nIn addition\, the exhibit explores some of the many issues with streetcars – their frequent accidents\, weather delays\, and the occasional worker’s strike that plagued the streetcar lines until their final days. \nThe Nitty Gritty of a Streetcar City is now open to all Museum guests in the lower level of the General Crook House Museum\, which is open seven days a week. But hurry – this exhibit closes Sunday\, May 30th!

DESCRIPTION:Study material culture and its impact on society through the history and appreciation of antiques. The class features hands-on examination of artifacts and explores the sociological\, economic\, historical and political impact of these artifacts on the 19th\, 20th and 21st centuries\, as well as their implications for today and tomorrow. Please bring one antique to each class for “Show and Tell.” \nClasses meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays with each day offering two options for class times:  \nMorning Class: 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m and Afternoon Class: 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. \n  \nCost: $8 per class for members \n$16 per class for non-members \nSpace Limited; RSVP with pre-payment required \ncall (402)-455-9990 ex 102 or admin@douglascohistory.org to register \nWhile we are excited to see our antique students again\, we want the health and safety of students and staff to be a priority. Therefore\, Antique Appreciation class will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines from the CDC: \n\nClasses will be held in the dining room and will provide 6 foot distancing.\nClass attendees will be required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing of 6 feet.\nNo food or drink will be allowed.\nAttendees are welcome to bring a show and tell item as usual; however\, CDC guidelines require that objects may not be shared.  You may not pass your item to others in the class or to Pat.  \n\nIn order to maintain 6 feet distance between attendees\, we are capping attendance for each session to 5 people.
