DESCRIPTION:JULY SECOND SUNDAY SERIES IS SOLD OUT! \nDouglas County Historical Society’s monthly program\, Second Sunday Series\, is proud to present the July installment entitled “History of the Gold Coast” to be given by Gold Coast neighborhood history\, Joni Fogarty. The presentation will take place on Sunday\, July 9 at 2 p.m. on Historic Fort Omaha in Metropolitan Community College’s Building 10\, located on the north end of campus. \nWithin the first few decades of its founding\, Omaha transformed from a financially insecure\, dirty\, wide-open western town to a city struggling to advance by adopting the accouterments of a civilized society. One of the signs of this advancement was the creation of a neighborhood so grand that it spoke for itself – the homeowners were in no need of announcing their success. Today\, that early neighborhood has been designation as the Gold Coast National Historic District. The beautiful architecture speaks to the success of many of Omaha’s early business entrepreneurs and tells a story of early Omaha history that needs to be preserved and shared. \nThe Second Sunday Series is a once per month series of presentations that serve to highlight a diverse range of topics and time periods related to Douglas County history. The Second Sunday Series is offered free of charge to DCHS members as a benefit of their membership and $5 for non-members. SUMMARY:Reader's Circle: A Perfect Evil by Alex Kava
DESCRIPTION:Douglas County Historical Society’s monthly book club\, Reader’s Circle\, announces its June meeting which will be on Wednesday\, June 28 at Noon at the General Crook House Museum. \nJune’s book will be A Perfect Evil by Bess Alex Kava. This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations. \nThe brutal murders of three young boys paralyze the citizens of Platte City\, Nebraska. What’s worse is the grim realization that the man recently executed for the crimes was a copycat. When Sheriff Nick Morrelli is called to the scene of another grisly murder\, it becomes clear that the real predator is still at large\, waiting to kill again. Morrelli understands the urgency of the case terrorizing his community\, but it’s the experienced eye of FBI criminal profiler Maggie O’Dell that pinpoints the true nature of the evil behind the killings―a revelation made all the more horrific when Morrelli’s own nephew goes missing. Maggie understands something else: the killer is enjoying himself\, relishing his ability to stay one step ahead of her\, making this case more personal by the hour. Because out there\, watching\, is a killer with a heart of pure and perfect evil. \nReader’s Circle meets on the last Wednesday of each month except for December and selects books that are either from a Douglas County author or relate to Douglas County history. DESCRIPTION:Douglas County Historical Society’s monthly book club\, Reader’s Circle\, announces its May meeting which will be on Wednesday\, May 31 at Noon at the General Crook House Museum. \nMay’s book will be A Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations. \nThe classic story of Abbie and Will Deal—pioneers who left everything behind for a new life on America’s frontier.\nAbbie Mackenzie dreamed of becoming a fine lady like her aristocratic grandmother\, devoting herself to music and art. But at eighteen Abbie found a different dream\, turning away from the promise of a comfortable life as a doctor’s wife to marry handsome\, quiet Will Deal. Together\, they eagerly accepted the challenge of homesteading in Nebraska territory\, where the prairies stretched as far as the eye could see\, and only the strongest survived for long.\nFor nearly 90 years\, reader have cherished Abbie’s story—an inspiring story of struggle against unexpected perils\, of love and laughter\, of the land she helped conquer and the family she raised. \nReader’s Circle meets on the last Wednesday of each month except for December and selects books that are either from a Douglas County author or relate to Douglas County history.
