DESCRIPTION:Douglas County Historical Society’s monthly book club\, Reader’s Circle\, announces its May meeting which will be on Wednesday\, May 31 at Noon at the General Crook House Museum. \nMay’s book will be A Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations. \nThe classic story of Abbie and Will Deal—pioneers who left everything behind for a new life on America’s frontier.\nAbbie Mackenzie dreamed of becoming a fine lady like her aristocratic grandmother\, devoting herself to music and art. But at eighteen Abbie found a different dream\, turning away from the promise of a comfortable life as a doctor’s wife to marry handsome\, quiet Will Deal. Together\, they eagerly accepted the challenge of homesteading in Nebraska territory\, where the prairies stretched as far as the eye could see\, and only the strongest survived for long.\nFor nearly 90 years\, reader have cherished Abbie’s story—an inspiring story of struggle against unexpected perils\, of love and laughter\, of the land she helped conquer and the family she raised. \nReader’s Circle meets on the last Wednesday of each month except for December and selects books that are either from a Douglas County author or relate to Douglas County history. SUMMARY:The First Nebraskans -Annual Standing Bear Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:Douglas County Historical Society’s (DCHS) annual commemoration of the story of Ponca Chief Standing Bear will take place on Friday\, May 12\, 2017 at the General Crook House Museum. \nThe theme for this year’s commemoration is The First Nebraskans and seeks to educate event goers by providing take-away brochures depicting brief histories of the tribes that have\, at one time or another\, called Nebraska home. \nEvery year DCHS revisits the story of Standing Bear in commemoration of the historic court case Standing Bear v. Crook. The landmark 1879 case took place in Omaha and established that Native Americans are “persons within the meaning of the law” and have the right of habeas corpus. \nThe free public event will start at the General Crook House Museum at 5:30 p.m. and feature a performance by the Many Moccasins Dance Troupe\, tastings of Wajapi – a Native American dish\, and free admission of the General Crook House Museum. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, to learn more please visit www.DouglasCoHistory.org.To RSVP please call DCHS at 402-455-9990\, ext. 101 or email at members@DouglasCoHistory.org \nDouglas County Historical Society’s mission is to preserve and enliven historical insight in Douglas County Nebraska. SUMMARY:Reader's Circle: O Pioneers! by Willa Cather
DESCRIPTION:Douglas County Historical Society’s monthly book club\, Reader’s Circle\, announces its April meeting which will be on Wednesday\, April 26 at Noon at the General Crook House Museum. \nApril’s book will be O Pioneers!  by Willa Cather. This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations. \nSet on the Nebraska prairie where Willa Cather (1873–1947) grew up\, this powerful early novel tells the story of the young Alexandra Bergson\, whose dying father leaves her in charge of the family and of the lands they have struggled to farm. In Alexandra’s long flight to survive and succeed\, O Pioneers! relates an important chapter in the history of the American frontier.\nEvoking the harsh grandeur of the prairie\, this landmark of American fiction unfurls a saga of love\, greed\, murder\, failed dreams\, and hard-won triumph. In the fateful interaction of her characters\, Willa Cather compares with keen insight the experiences of Swedish\, French\, and Bohemian immigrants in the United States. And in her absorbing narrative\, she displays the virtuoso storytelling skills that have made her one of the most admired masters of the American novel. \nReader’s Circle meets on the last Wednesday of each month except for December and selects books that are either from a Douglas County author or relate to Douglas County history. However\, in honor of the state’s sesquicentennial celebrations the scope is being expanded to include selections on the Nebraska 150 official reading list. \nAttendees to each meeting will be offered coffee along with an assorted tray of treats provided by local favorite\, Dugger’s Café. \nIf you are interested in participating in the Reader’s Circle\, please call 402-455-9990 ext. 101 or email Members@DouglasCoHistory.org.
