SUMMARY:Second Sunday Series: History of the Gold Coast by Joni Fogarty
DESCRIPTION:JULY SECOND SUNDAY SERIES IS SOLD OUT! \nDouglas County Historical Society’s monthly program\, Second Sunday Series\, is proud to present the July installment entitled “History of the Gold Coast” to be given by Gold Coast neighborhood history\, Joni Fogarty. The presentation will take place on Sunday\, July 9 at 2 p.m. on Historic Fort Omaha in Metropolitan Community College’s Building 10\, located on the north end of campus. \nWithin the first few decades of its founding\, Omaha transformed from a financially insecure\, dirty\, wide-open western town to a city struggling to advance by adopting the accouterments of a civilized society. One of the signs of this advancement was the creation of a neighborhood so grand that it spoke for itself – the homeowners were in no need of announcing their success. Today\, that early neighborhood has been designation as the Gold Coast National Historic District. The beautiful architecture speaks to the success of many of Omaha’s early business entrepreneurs and tells a story of early Omaha history that needs to be preserved and shared. \nThe Second Sunday Series is a once per month series of presentations that serve to highlight a diverse range of topics and time periods related to Douglas County history. The Second Sunday Series is offered free of charge to DCHS members as a benefit of their membership and $5 for non-members. We welcome all community members interested to attend and due to limited space we ask all to RSVP either by phone at 402-455-9990 or email at Members@DouglasCoHistory.org.

DESCRIPTION:Douglas County Historical Society’s monthly book club\, Reader’s Circle\, announces its July meeting which will be on Wednesday\, July 26 at Noon at the General Crook House Museum. \nJuly’s book will be The Ordinary Spaceman by Clayton Anderson. This book is an official selection of the Nebraska 150 Celebrations. \nWhat’s it like to travel at more than 850 MPH\, riding in a supersonic T-38 twin turbojet engine airplane? What happens when the space station toilet breaks? How do astronauts “take out the trash” on a spacewalk\, tightly encapsulated in a space suit with just a few layers of fabric and Kevlar between them and the unforgiving vacuum of outer space? \nThe Ordinary Spaceman puts you in the flight suit of U.S. astronaut Clayton C. Anderson and takes you on the journey of this small-town boy from Nebraska who spent 167 days living and working on the International Space Station\, including more than forty hours of space walks. Having applied to NASA fifteen times over fifteen years to become an astronaut before his ultimate selection\, Anderson offers a unique perspective on his life as a veteran space flier\, one characterized by humility and perseverance. \nReader’s Circle meets on the last Wednesday of each month except for December and selects books that are either from a Douglas County author or relate to Douglas County history.
