SUMMARY:Second Sunday: Omaha/Council Bluffs - The Steel Ties that Bind
DESCRIPTION:Note: The October presentation will be presented on the FIRST Sunday of the month.  \nOne single incident can change everything. 160 years ago the most significant thing to ever impact Omaha occurred: Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order designating Council Bluffs as eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad. Council Bluffs? But why then were the first tracks\, headquarters\, and shops in Omaha? It’s a great story with sufficient skullduggery to make the activities of Bernie Madoff and Enron look pious by comparison\, and the two cities have been bound together by steel rails ever since. This program explains how the East ended… and where the West didn’t began. \nRICHARD WARNER serves as president of Preserve Council Bluffs\, an officer of the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County and vice-president of the Pottawattamie County Genealogical Society.  He has edited the Historical Society’s member publication for over thirty-five years\, co-authored four books about local history\, and written over a hundred articles on the subject.  Dr. Warner hosts the podcast “Accidentally Historic\,” produces the local history YouTube channel “Council Bluffs Revealed\,” and is an Iowa Governor’s Volunteer award recipient.  He is a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs\, Creighton University (BS\, DDS) and UNO (MA). \nOctober 2 at 2:00 p.m. \nGross Auditorium at College of Saint Mary \nFree to DCHS members; $5 for non-members \nCall 402-455-9990 x102 for reservations or email admin@douglascohistory.org
