Her passion\, conviction\, dedication and persistence predicted her success.  As for being a woman\, she said\, “Being a woman has only bothered me in climbing trees.” \nThe importance of politics and political connections is magnified at the New York state legislature in Albany as she advocates for a 54 hour work week for women and becomes the voice of the work force. In 1911 she witnesses the horrific Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the death of 146 young women\, and this experience further sparks her goal to implement workplace safety standards. \nThis quote from the Library Journal describes the book as\, “a fictionalized (well researched) portrayal of a phenomenal woman who has largely been lost to history.”

Through vivid storytelling and extensive research\, Von Drehle examines the tragedy that claimed the lives of 146 workers\, many of them young immigrant women\, and explores how the disaster became a catalyst for sweeping workplace reforms and labor protections across America. \nJoin us for an engaging discussion as we examine a pivotal moment in American history and reflect on the lasting impact of those whose lives changed the nation.

Rather than focusing on presidents\, generals\, and famous political leaders\, McMahon shines a light on twelve remarkable individuals whose actions influenced the course of American history from the Revolutionary era through the Civil Rights Movement. \nDrawing from extensive research and a gift for storytelling\, McMahon introduces readers to reformers\, educators\, activists\, laborers\, and everyday citizens who challenged injustice\, strengthened their communities\, and fought for a better future. Through their stories\, the book reveals how history is not made solely by those in positions of power\, but also by ordinary people willing to take extraordinary action when it matters most. \nAt its heart\, The Small and the Mighty is a celebration of perseverance\, civic responsibility\, and the often-overlooked individuals whose contributions continue to shape our lives today. It challenges readers to reconsider who we remember\, whose stories are told\, and how even seemingly small acts can leave a lasting mark on history. \nJoin us for a thoughtful discussion as we explore these inspiring stories and discover the profound impact that ordinary Americans have had on the nation’s journey.
