Second Sunday: Iona Fortune on the History of Burlesque in Douglas County

June 8 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join Iona Fortune, a burlesque dancer and art historian, as she retells the history of burlesque in Douglas County. From the 1890s to the 1990s, North American burlesque was a staple of entertainment, showcasing quick-reveal and slow-peel costumes that influenced the stage and screen.

Iona is a burlesque dancer and art historian. She has been performing around the country for the last 7 years. She is interested in the intersection between burlesque, costumes, culture and history. Fortune is originally from Lincoln and graduated from Iowa State University in 2018. She holds a BA in Art History and a BA in Anthropology with a minor in Classical Studies. Since 2023, she’s been researching and writing about the history of burlesque in Nebraska, shedding light on Nebraska burlesque history by publishing articles, producing burlesque shows, and created “zines.”

Reservations are appreciated as we plan for refreshments following the talk at the General Crook House Museum. Please email admin@douglascohistory.org or call/text Cindy Hadsell at (402) 312-4929.
