The History of Elkhorn

Sunday, January 10, 2027 | 2:00 PM

From a small 19th-century railroad town along the Elkhorn River to a thriving part of modern Omaha, Elkhorn has a fascinating story to tell!

Long before its suburban neighborhoods and bustling streets, Elkhorn was an independent community with its own identity, traditions, and generations of families who helped shape its future. While the landscape has changed dramatically over the years, its history remains an important part of Douglas County’s story.

Join the Douglas County Historical Society as we welcome local historian, author, and preservationist Kristine Gerber for an engaging journey through Elkhorn’s past. Discover how this once independent town grew and evolved, the people and places that helped define it, and the history that still connects yesterday’s Elkhorn to the community we know today.

Whether you grew up in Elkhorn, live there now, or simply enjoy uncovering the stories behind familiar places, this is a presentation you won’t want to miss!

About the Speaker: Kristine Gerber

Kristine Gerber is a respected local historian, author, educator, and historic preservation advocate whose dedication to preserving and sharing our region’s history has made a lasting impact.

She has edited or published more than 50 books, including Ak-Sar-Ben: Looking Back & Leading Onward, commemorating Ak-Sar-Ben’s 130th anniversary and The Durham Museum’s 50th anniversary.

Her preservation efforts have helped secure National Register of Historic Places status for more than 100 properties, protecting significant pieces of our architectural heritage.

Kristine has also helped uncover overlooked stories through Omaha Public Schools’ Making Invisible Histories Visible program. Student research on Omaha’s historic Green Book sites contributed to bringing the Smithsonian Institution’s The Negro Motorist Green Book exhibition to The Durham Museum as the final stop on its national tour.

Through her research, writing, and dedication to historic preservation, Kristine continues to remind us that history isn’t simply something we study. It’s something we experience through the communities, buildings, and stories that surround us.
