Becoming Madame Secretary by Stephanie Dray.

Discover the life of the first woman cabinet member Frances Perkins and her role in the creation of the New Deal and the Social Security program.

As the book begins, the reader is introduced to Perkins’ early life as an advocate for social justice and her relationships with Sinclair Lewis, Mary Harriman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Al Smith and FDR.

She is determined to create better living and working conditions for immigrant women and children. Her passion, conviction, dedication and persistence predicted her success.  As for being a woman, she said, “Being a woman has only bothered me in climbing trees.”
The importance of politics and political connections is magnified at the New York state legislature in Albany as she advocates for a 54
hour work week for women and becomes the voice of the work force. In 1911 she witnesses the horrific Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the death of 146 young women, and this experience further sparks her goal to implement workplace safety standards.

This quote from the Library Journal describes the book as, “a fictionalized (well researched) portrayal of a phenomenal woman who has largely been lost to history.”

PAST EVENTS

JUNE 10th - Crook House Guild Patriotic Luncheon

General Crook House Museum
5730 N. 30th Street, Building 11B
Omaha, NE. 68111

On Wednesday, June 10, members and guests gathered for a delightful afternoon of fellowship, food, music, and history at the General Crook House Guild’s Patriotic Luncheon.

The event began with a delicious Picnic Box Lunch prepared by Abraham Catering. Guests enjoyed chicken salad croissants, pasta salad, fresh fruit salad, and a chocolate chip cookie while visiting with friends and fellow supporters of the General Crook House Museum.

Following lunch, attendees received Guild updates and had the opportunity to hear more about the heart and purpose of the General Crook House Guild. The presentation highlighted the Guild’s ongoing commitment to supporting the museum, preserving local history, and fostering meaningful connections within our community.

The afternoon continued with a lively patriotic sing-along led by the talented Sarpy Serenaders Barbershop Quartet. Their performance helped commemorate 250 years of freedom and song, filling the room with familiar melodies, laughter, and patriotic spirit. Guests joined in singing beloved American favorites, creating a memorable celebration of our nation’s heritage.

After the musical program, attendees were treated to a special private viewing of a remarkable collection of Star-Spangled Jewelry. Since the early twentieth century, patriotic jewelry has served as a unique expression of American pride. The collection featured both vintage and contemporary pieces, including flags, eagles, V for Victory designs, political mascots, Uncle Sam motifs, liberty bells, and whimsical red, white, and blue creations. Each piece offered a fascinating glimpse into how Americans have celebrated their patriotism through wearable art across generations.

The Patriotic Luncheon was a wonderful reminder of what makes the General Crook House Guild so special: friendship, service, history, and a shared appreciation for the stories that connect us. Thank you to the Guild Board, volunteers, performers, and attendees who made this event such a memorable success.

As we continue to grow and share the Guild’s activities, we are excited to introduce the new General Crook House Guild page on our website. There, you can explore upcoming Guild events, revisit past gatherings, and browse photographs capturing the special moments and friendships that make our organization so unique.

Whether you are a longtime member or interested in learning more about the Guild, we invite you to visit the page often and stay connected with everything happening throughout the year.

We look forward to many more opportunities to gather, learn, and celebrate together.
